Plenty of Prompts

Daily writing—even a few minutes’ worth—is standard practice for many writers. But what to do when you’re out of ideas—when the well has run dry or you don’t know what to do next? That’s where prompts come in. Join us for a lively class of writing, laughing, and learning. You’ll leave with a well’s worth of ideas to write about and plenty of resources for staying energized in the future.

Crafting Personal Essays and Memoir

An essay is a piece of writing on a particular subject and to assay is to explore, discover, look deeper. Some stories—whether about our pasts, our dreams, or our neighbors—simply need to be told. Join us in a structured, weekly format to learn about writing memoirs and personal essays. Along the way we’ll certainly assay—that is, we’ll find out:

  • where to begin our work
  • how to remember more details
  • how to create writing that others will want to read.

Where the Story Begins

How do I start? That’s the question common to all writers as they look to begin any new piece of work. Learn methods other writers use to create compelling openings and discover similar steps you can take in your own writing. Feel free to bring questions and ideas about specific projects you have. We’ll break down what keeps a reader reading after the first few lines and experiment with our own fresh starts.
